union

Hands down, it's the best choice, you get better educated people at a fixed cost and your labor force isn't gonna leave for a better paying job. It is something to consider. Why not pay your people & yourself a living wage. In the end, if you don't, and you turn a profit (because your labor is cheaper) your only gonna pay Uncle Sam the extra tax on your profits. Pay the benefits to yourself, NOT to the IRS. Your profit margin may be smaller, but you make the commitment to your people not to the IRS. Robert O'Connor/NJ.. ps BUY AMERICAN. union

The company i work for is a residential service company. We have around 8 service technicians, who do mostly repairs and replacement on residential heating appliances. We do however have 4 who do some light commercial work. On their urging,we now have to consider joining a union,to maintain "Prospects for future growth" I have never been in a union, and have heard a lot of negetive comments. I don't see how a union can affectively guide a company that does a wide range of work,Hvac, plumbing , remodeling , ect. Any recommendations from experiences would be appreciated.

    union can ..

    be great.

I am not union but know many union guys.

Medical and retirement benefits are nice. Pay is not bad. You might end up getting paid more. If you need more help on a job go to the hall and get more guys. Done the job send them back. This can help a company grow.

One problem is that there can be a few slugs that you can't get rid of. This can hurt a job.

There is good and bad. I think if you work with the union and have a good rep that more good can come from the partnership.

    Union Shop

I am a member of Local 506, Plumbers & Pipefitters. Our shop is a small union shop, one of the few in town. I have worked both sides of the fence, and I'm here to tell you that you will not regret to join. We do everything from residential to heavy commercial. Joining raises everyone's
standard of living. I have enjoyed being a member for the last seven years. Lots of skilled tradesmen on both sides of the fence. However, I believe that the UA's training program is excellent. Not to mention a larger pool of potential employees to choose from. These are my opinions on the whole picture. Thanks for your time. Best of luck to you

steamfitters union member/ small mechanical contractor owner here. if your local is progressive, has good reputation along with training opportunities you most likely will be forever happier. one thing that i believe every local should have is open solicitation. this means you can go find your own job. this creates a better workplace where the talented members will do well, and the so called slugs will will fill the voids. joining will most likely open more doors to your owner and mechanics, as there are many facil;ities out there that exclusively use union labor. example... ever work on a 800 or thousand ton chiller??????? ever want to. ever ever seen a six hundred horsepower boiler?? residential and light commercial are tedious to me, id much rather replace chillers than three ton split systems. well, good luck.
