think it said several call's...sound's like it wasn't fixed..
"She was lighting her pilot light when the explosion occurred," Assistant Fire Chief Don Kenny said. He said she told him she had made several service calls on the unit over the weekend.

I know how she got there...

Bought a house a few years ago with gravity hot water heat. Called in a "reputable" heating company to check the system before I bought the house. Inspection said everyting working properly. I like to just understand how stuff works (am a service mechanic by trade - have had my own sucessful business servicing mailing and bindery equipment) so I read up on gravity hot water etc. and looked over my new "baby". Thermocouple was burnt completely off at the pilot! I thought "how is this working?". The thermocouple had been bypassed at the relay. No way it was working when the guy "inspected" it. Had the boiler replaced two years ago by also "reputable" company, in business 50-odd years, works on boilers a lot, sends a guy to Wetstock every year. The laundry list of problems was so long I won't even attempt to write it here. The last straw on the (approxamately) 12th callback in 4 months was when the service manager handled the call himself and left with two water leaks and a gas leak on joints he made up during that call. Discovered them several days later when I went to the basement to do some woodworking and smelled gas. Shut off the gas and looked around and found the water leaks too. The point is, not all professionals are. Now, I'm sure most of you wallies are pro's in the true sense of the word, and this web site and forum is all about what's best in the trade, but I know how she got there...

    know how \"we\" got \"here\",

man, do I ever. I'm doing it in a small town, limited inspections, unlimited home do, home brew, as well as a host of incompetent "professionals" tossed into the flux. My latest large disapointment was a local hardware store that, along with a laundry list of foolish maintaince errors, elected to hire some twit when the AC coils started freezing up. Ahh, the creativity. Instead of resolving the air flow problem, (dirty blower wheel, filters, and impinged coils) this "professional" installed a "freeze-stat" called it fixed, got his two rolls of quarters, and went off to the next poor soul. I find it hard to remain pro-active in spots like this, but when I can, it keeps my blood psi where it belongs............By-pass the safety indeed... keep your eyes open guys and gals, you're just one goof away from eternity.
