Mouat Vapor Heating

I would like to replace a 1925 boiler that was part of a two pipe steam Mouat Vapor heating system. I believe the Mouat 'pump' has been disconnected for some time, although the piping has never been removed from the system. The boiler was originall coal, converted to gas and I imagine is quite inefficient. Are there any specific design considerations that must be addressed if a new gas fired boiler is provided? For the system to work properly should a vacuum type pump be installed to remove the air from the system?

  • yes, mouat is a very finicky system..

the pressure needs to be very low,,just a couple or three ounces..the return piping may be vented into the chimney..be carefull here...we like to leave this pipe but it should have an aquastat/alarm bell or light to warn you if steam gets into the return cause it will go into the chimney..you may not have this pipe..you may have a main vent..it may look like three tubes standing up, or like a huge castiron ''bullet''..big, and yes it is cast iron..if you blow thru it you will notice no resistance..this means you will have to replace it with quite a few modern air vents,,even if you use the big gorton..if you change an original moaut radiator valve, watch out..bet you blow steam into the return..you will have to orifice the opening..now you may or may not have water seal mouat traps,as mouat made both waterseal and thermostatic..system balancing of the radiators after putting a new boiler on a mouat system is ESSENTIAL..dont be surprised if things dont act right till you do this..mouat is a lovely system and very easy to understand but incredibly heavy in the fine tuning dept. we work on lots of mouat systems since it was a local company..feel free to email me with an questions on it anytime..when i die and go on mr. mouat is one of the people i want to find and shake his hand..just remember when you have mouat troubles his systems ran on coal and were never designed for gas..makes our job much more difficult in the tweaking sector..
  • oh, dont you dare

throw away that gage on the old mouat boiler...personally i'd clean that bad boy up and put it on the new boiler...no joke, i would...it would of course look great on my desk also ;) BUT IT WOULD LOOK BETTER ON YOUR NEW BOILER, hint hint..

That looks like a \"Mercer\" boiler

made by H.B. Smith. It's a return-flue design which is inherently more efficient than the usual boiler of that era. I just worked on one that's over 100 years old and still in fine shape, and got it to run more efficiently by baffling the flue passages. Don't try this yourself- have a pro do it.

    The new smaller boiler would

give more room for the chrome hanger collection (:-o)
