and don't let timmie or Glenn here ya talkin' about this. With a very-oversized gas boiler its all you can do sometimes without changing out whole boiler. The big thing to watch out for is condensation and soot and of course co in those sections - especially over time.....Mad Dog

    Anybody have some recommendations

Was looking at another one pipe steam system today with a MGB-8 1,190,000 input in a 10,000 sq ft building. Added up the radiation and ended up with only 712 EDR (170,880) feed with 3 21/2 inch and 1-3 inch mains. Some rads have been removed, but not that many. I would like to downfire this beasty closer to load and maybe improve the inherently poor steam quality (narrow sections). Rating plate says minimum is about 300,000, if I read it right in the dark.

    We have

removed a few burner racks (naturally from the outtermost towards the pilot rack) with some success. The size of the sections is a point, but the size of the steam chest and riser outlet diameter's is key. W/M leads in that regard IMHO.

We love the double EG and EGH 3" outlet holes in the newer and smaller "cousin."

    Burner logs removel/CG A/UL voided

You start removing burner logs and change the boiler design. You have just voided the UL/CGA listing on that boiler, which means and thats what pertects your **** if there is ever a major problem.
Change the boiler not the logs.
Talk to the boiler co and ask them about that UL/CGA listing and if it will be voided.
  • Do not downsize boilers

In addition to voiding all of the approvals and certifications you may be opening the door for some combustion problems and in fact even some high bills believe it or not.

My experience with an AGA run boiler and furnace derating program in the past found that underfiring boilers especially steam, was not an energy saver and in fact was the cause of increased fuel usage in many cases.

As I have posted here many times the best energy saver during that particular program was installing insulation or increasing insulation in the homes. It was also the least expensive in cost to accomplish. The overall statistical compiled savings on insulation was 11% average in all of the homes that had it done. One home saw a 15% savings on fuel costs over a two year period. These homes were monitered with a meter at each boiler and furnace along with flow meters.

    Timmie

I spoke to Weil about this, and they said on the LGB, running the boiler on low fire reduced fuel consumption. Would not approve reducing fire rate on the MGB and had never heard of a minimum input on the rating plate.... Not too many MGB's left areound here but 2 out of 3 I've looked at had a minimum firing rate stamped right into the plate. I am going to send them a photo of the plate when I get a chance. Would you like one too?
