Zone Valve failure?

Good Morning! I think I have an issue w/ my zone valve for the upstairs. The past 2 weeks I have spikes in the temperature 5-6 degrees over the set point of my thermostat. It is a digital Thermostat so at first I thought there might be a problem with that, so I turned of the call for heat at the thermostat. Still having the same 5-6 spike over the set point of the thermostat. The baseboards in that zone are getting a call for heat somewhere because they are very warm. What could it be? My electric bills have been out of sight lately and I know the boiler has been running more that usual(i heat w/ oil).
I am a homeowner and I am going to call in a pro, but I just like to be an educated comsumer.
Any thoughts?
Thanks in advance for your help.
