Boiler Technology

First, I'm very new to this industry (weeks). Please, be gentle.
Everytime I speak to someone, the only boilers that are worth a darn are the models that haven't changed in 30 years. From an energy standpoint, you can't beat a condensing/modulating boiler. It's physics, can't be done.
However, I get 1 of 2 speaches about them.
1) Buy American, you commie **** (there aren't any modern, all American made boilers that I can find that people trust)
2) You can't trust technology. Modern is bad, antique & inefficient is good. (And I'm sure your '72 Chrysler Newport runs great too @ 8mpg)
I'd love to use a small, wall hung, condensing/modulating boiler, that is made here in the 60-100MBtu range, that has is well respected in the industry, but I can't.
Please help, good advice is hard to come by.

Why cant you?
If it is for specific reasons then ok...Energy Kinetics makes gas and oil boilers....Good efficiency...Check them out on-line. I install peerless and weil mclain...both have good lines. Oil or gas?? I assume gas if you are thinking condensing. Sometimes you can take a more standard boiler and do differant things to make it more efficient. Outdoor reset controls..continuous circulation etc.. Most people in the business shy away from newer things untill they are proven for a while alot of us have gotten burnt with new technology thrown out in the industry..ie blue ray boilers and furnaces...early 90+ furnaces...ultra vent etc

Amazing...
...I could have written that EXACT same message about five years ago when I was bitten by the hydronic bug and researching a replacement boiler--or at least maximize the efficiency of the current.
Unfortunately the debate only seems to have grown since then.
Fortunately my old W-M is still chugging away but the only means left to me to increase its efficiency (in my system)is buffering. Back then in one of my first messages to The Wall I was writing saying my boiler seemed to need "ballast".

Buy and read these
two books, a good recommend from Mr R. Bean and Dale Picard, both accomplished, sucessful inventors
Anytime you go out on a limb to invent something new, you are bound to get plenty "i told you so's" Some folks, the competition often, would like to see you fail.
Personally I'm glad we aren't still sitting around campfires for warmth.
I greatly appreciate the Dave Davis and HTP approch, and many other great heating pioneers, to "finding a way"
"It's only impossible until it's not" Captain Picard (a different one from above), Starship Enterprise!
Chose your own comfortable level of daringness, when researching new and exciting heating products

condensing boilers
I know of only three or four that are all American made (except oh course some imported fittings or controls).
Dunkirk Q-90: condensing 90% AFue
Dunkirk Quantum Leap: condensing + recuperative 95% AFue
Hydrotherm multipulse: condensing 90% afue.... this ones been around since the 1950's I'm told, and commercially since the 1970's
Munchkin (I think): condensing 92% afue
and Peerless Pinnacle
Other Partially American: Weil Mclain Ultra
Imported: a whole bunch
Any others guys?

Utica
My distributor came buy yesterday and stated that Utica is coming out with a fully condensing boiler that is 100% American Made. I would wait awhile to see how they work to work out the bugs or make sure the customer is willing to try something new realizing that you may be back quite often working out the bugs.
Are you a designer or installer.
If either or why don't you start by earning the respect of the guys in the shop. Let them know that you are smart by your actions not your words. If you go to them and let them no "condensing boilers are more efficient because of simple Physics you are implying (not intentionally) that they are dumb or ignorant. I know you mean well and its hard being young in a business like this. But first earn there respect, than slowly bring in different control methods, than when you show them how good it works they will listen to you when you talk about high efficient boilers.
You have to walk before you run Grasshopper.....
Good Luck0 -
I suspect the Utica is the same as the Dunkirk
They are both ECR International.
