    Emergency shut down procedures

    1. Turn off the gas going to the heater.

    2. Turn of the water going to the unit.

    3. Attach a drain hose to the bottom drain and place end of hose in a drain lower than the bottom of the heater. Open the drain valve.

    4. Open all the hot water faucets on the house to allow the system to drain down.

    5. Start a fresh pot of coffee for the plumber that's on his way over to replace the old heater. May a clear path for them to get to the heater.

    6. Sit back and wait.

    And, Jim, ask

the pro to tag all the valves in the basement so that the next time there's an emergency everyone in the house will know what works what.
