What not to do to a gas valve

There have recently been several posts here on the Wall about the gas valve not opening. The posts went on to say or someone gave them this solution. BANG THE GAS VALVE WITH A HAMMER. I am here to tell you that if the gas valve will not open then change the gas valve. It is never a very good idea to BANG A GAS VALVE. The truth is that you could cause damage internally to the valve and then it will not shut off. It will be stuck open mecahnically. You then better hope all the boiler safeties work, and think about this what kind of safety do you have on a warm air furnace after the limit is out of the picture?

    smart valve

had horizontal fyrnace in cold attic

ignitor didn,t light so replaced ignitor

now ignitor lights ,pilot is on and that as far as it goes.

455pm picked up valve but dont think i should have 2 items down on 1 call.

i shut gas and electric and take out a heat gun warm the valve. go thru the sequence again now main flame lights???
  • Nathan what was the letter

after the Smart Valve number, if it was not a M or a P it should not be used in cold places only M & P rated for -40 degrees up to 175 (F). All other valves only good for "0" to 175. You need to make sure as it will fail again. The difference is the material that the valve seats are made of.
