CO Detection System

I have seen these types of systems for years, most of them sense in the return duct. But if you are cooking or using a fireplace or just pulling your car out of the garage do you want your furnace and water heater locked out?? Most people that make systems like this are not aware of real field conditions.

is anyone familar with this system? It is advertised in this weeks NEWS. It has an automatic furnace and water heater shut off system. It then brings them back on after the CO clears.

    It is manufactured by:

    A couple of concerns

First off, I wonder where they got their stats - "furnace and hot water tanks represent 95% of residential accidental poisonings". My understanding is that it is much lower than that - more like 20%.

They also state that the sensor: 'As a bio-mimetic it is the most sensitive, optimal and reliable technology available.'

This is simply not the case, electro-chemical sensors, like those used in combustion analyzers and the CO-Experts Monitor are far more accurate.

Bio-mimetic sensors are also cross sensitive to a tremendous number of common household products (hair spray, cleaning solvents, paint, etc).

Electrochemical CO sensors may be cross sensitive to only hydrogen (like from charging an automobile battery).

Also their UL/2034 listing is not something I would be bragging about.

Amoung other concerns with the UL listing, it means that it will not alarm below 70 ppm and is not required to test the sensor when the test button is pushed, only the electronics.

    JMHO
  • Thanks Rudy,

I also wondered about those things. I am going to give their spokes person a call today as I am interested to hear what they have to say and in particular how they are shutting off equipment, in particular water heaters which typically are not operated by electricty.

    Where do these units sense?

In the flue area, or in the room area? If they sense in the flue, wouldn't the appliance short-cycle like crazy? If they sense in the room, how do they prevent turning off the wrong appliance? I guess the 95 % "residential" occurrence number dismisses automobiles parked and running in the garage (I didn't look into this, just wondering)?
  • Well one thing for sure

they do not answer phone calls real quick. I have called twice and left voice mail.

I spoke with Geoff Winters today from Electronic Control Systems, LLC located in Greenwich, CT. He shares all of our passion about CO Detectors he had his own personal experience with almost losing his family to CO. He is a Wall Street type who got very angry after his near miss and has a definite passion for saving lives and has put his money to work to get it done. He would be a powerful spokes person. We may not agree with all the components of his systems or feel that they work as well as we would like but I think we have to give him an ear. I would love to get him together with George Kerr from CO Experts.

Let us keep an open mind about anything that is out there that is trying to save lives. Geoff's passion is to do that. I have invited him to come to this site and discuss with us his product and what it will do. I also encouraged him to have his engineer Mark Goldstein who I am familar with from Quantum who have been working on detectors for some time to also post here and let an open discussion take place. This is how we can put an end to this poison. We must all work together NO EGOS, just love for your fellow man.

Believe me when I tell you as far as I am concerned CO Experts has the best detector on the market today. That detector tied in with this whole house alarm system would be unbeatable. I am not an engineer so it may have compatability problems but please let us take a look.
