Problem with a \"Furnace\"

the consumer relations folks at International Comfort Products for their quick response and excellent information as it relates to this problem. Here is the sad story, the homeowner is so upset they are replacing the six year old furnace with another brand. This because of the failure of service personnel to find out the real problem, fix it and move on. Six different techs looked at this job and no one bothered to even get in touch with tech services to get some assistance.

I have asked to have the furnace to take into my center and test it and find out what is really wrong with it. I wish I had gotten in on this from the beginning. A lot of money and time has been wasted AGAIN!!!!

with the White Rodgers "Radiant Sense Control". Has anyone had any experience with this system. Here is the deal, I got a phone call today from an old friend whose son-in-law has this unit in his house. There have been several service companies out on this including the factory recommended company. They have replaced the following:

    Six hot surface igniters

    gas valve White Rodgers 36E35

    Integrated Control White Rodgers 50A52-111

Still not working correctly; It comes on goes through pre-purge, igniter warm up, igniter glows, burner ignites then goes out immediately. I have all the literature on this unit and I have written in the past a Troubleshooting Guide on this Radiant Sense system. It is my guess as I have not been able to actually see this furnce yet that the "Radiant Sense Control" is bad. Anyone had any experince with that happening on any International Comfort Products using this system.

    Grounding

Check the grounding on the unit, I have seen a lot of ignition problems that were caused by a poor or no ground.

    change

Timmie-- Change that dawg from rad. flame to flame sensor Trane makes a kit to convert their's. Maybe you can retrofit something with an S89 honeywell HSI box
  • The ground is okay

that was checked on every call.
  • This is a Integrated Control

so a S89 would not be compatible. I have a feeling that the window on the Radiant Sensor may be dirty. We will find out tomorrow.

    Just in case

Timmie I have seen this on other types of equipment where the air switch was just barely making and when the furnace ignited it opened and shut it off and then it does it over and over.

    No diagnostics?

Doesn't this control have any diagnostics, to help differentiate what component was causing the problem?
  • It seems this problem is

outside the detection for giving a diagnostic indication. There is a diagnostic LED but it has been of no use with this problem.
  • Thanks Jim I will check

that when I get the furnace. It is going to be removed and replaced in the next couple of days.
  • Jim I got a set

of instructions from ICP today on a changeout for the Radiant Sense System. Thanks for the info.

    OH Heil

Timmie Thats arcoaire the same as a Heil furnace am I correct? Has any one hung a Mag gauge on the Inducer draft fan and what where your # against the spec. Is the pressure switch pulling in and holding what happens if you trick the pressure Switch?
We did not lose the donut out of the inducer draft assem. did we or install the wrong one.
What happens when you take the cover off the burner box will the furnace stay lite? ? Did you jump R to W or just roll the stat up? Did you ohm the flame sensor is it in spec? How is the drain/trap assuming 90 plus here has it been cleaned? has the port on the inducer draft fan been checked for a restriction slide a piece of 18 gauge tstst wire down it, how about the tubing for the pressure and drain is it in good shape?? just a few 1st thoughts Good luck-J.Lockard

    Tim

I am not familiar with this furnace but do sell and install Heil furnaces.
Is it a condensing furnace ?

Does it have a serpentine heat exchanger ?
    Is it sealed combustion ?

A few years ago when ICP first came out with this style heat exchanger they had a problem with the way the two sections were fastened together. They used a grommet / ring type system. Over time these grommets separated. Not enough to allow the heat exchanger to leak CO out but enough to allow air to leak in. When this happens the fire triangle changes big time and the air leaks are enough to prevent the inducer on the furnace from working.

I have seen pressure switches shut off the furnace
    Igniters fail
Limit switches shut the unit down when the heat

I am not sure if this helps but it is worth looking at.

  • Jim I will check

all of that when I get the furnace.
  • I picked up the furnace

today and it is at my center. I will bookmark this thread and resurrect it when I find out what is wrong with the furnace.
