While I presume it's a steam boiler, I'll post any details when the cause is determined. Apparently no one was injured, but it literally "moved" the building.

i once witnessed a smith 650 forty section boiler literally melted all the downcomers into a giant pile of slag due to a tech jumping out the low water cutoff. the service call came in around dinner time that the boiler was glowing. fortunately i was close by and beat the fire department there. the firemen came running in with hoses in hand ready to squirt. had they opened those hoses we probably all would have been killed. the pile of slag glowed into the next day. its unbelievable to me that boilers are sometimes left there in the basement to die, with the owners not really knowing the potential harm they can cause, all the while they spend much more than good maintainance would cost on painting their lobby or some other thing. we need to get a good marketing firm on this soon.

    A long time ago....

I was doing service work for a nursing home. Suddenly the calls dried up. I called to inquire if there was a problem and was told that "---- the Handyman" had been doing their work recently for a lot less. A couple weeks later I get a call and the director asks if I can come right over. Just a couple blocks so I run over and meet him in the driveway. Boiler was behaving in an odd manner he says. Yes, the Handy Man had been working on it. Pull around the building and all I can see is a 4" plug in the relief valve...and that baby was rockin'. I went out front and shut down the whole buildings gas supply. He had plugged it, jumpered the controls, got it working and left. Evacuated the building and it took a long time for that baby to simmer down. YIKES!
