The fact that most 80% furnaces put more heat up the chimney than an old furnaces because they do not add 50% dilution air would make one think liners shouldn't be needed. Many places they are required, someday they will be recalled and they fix nothing-just hide problems

Are chimney liners required for all 80% efficency replacement furnaces?

If you follow the National Fuel Gas Code, any chimney with outside exposure below the roofline should have a liner. Some instances, if the installation meets certain requirements on tile-liner sizing and water heater draft hood sizing, an inside chimney could get by without one though it is wise to use one anyway.

More info is needed,what is the location of the chimney( inside the house or out side),is there a clay liner in the chimney,how many btus,is this a hot air furnace,how many units are vented into the chimney,what fuels,what maanufacturer furnace,what is your location,State please,it makes a difference,what materials comprise your existing chimney Oh yea the short answer is yes.
