Banging in one pipe only...

My son called me Sunday and says dad my radiator is hammering so bad it's going to come off the wall.
He lives in a apt.blg in boston, small studio. He actually runs my office since Sept. anyway I told him to go down to the boiler room and check the pressure,7-1/2psi he says.
I said to my son to tweek the operating control down and give the beast a rest. He got a good nite sleep Sunday and well rested on Mon morning.

Now this may not be your problem but it sure is the place
to start..It could be a bad pitch some place too.

  • Banging pipes form only one spot...

We have major hammering when the heat first starts, but it is only in the one line to the furtherst radiator from the boiler. The line seems to have a return, almost a loop back to the other pipes. Its the only one in the house that has one coming out of the baseboard and a seperate pipe coming in. The rest, I think are a loop, going one to the next. The room with the banging was an addition in the 50's and the the last room in the house. Thanks, any answers will be helpful!

If you get Dan's book, "the fine art of steam heating", it describes a host of things that cause banging from boiler operation to piping to venting, etc. I think it's hard to diagnose without seeing the situation (and I'm no pro either, just learning as I go). But the book is totally worth it if you truly want to understand your system.
