Temperature difference

Need help. House about 100 years old, 3 stories, one pipe system, thermostat in 2nd floor hallway.

Problem: example, thermostat set at 72, 2nd and third maintains that level, but first floor is about 68. It even seems that some radiators on the 2nd and 3rd floor put out more heat than the ones on the first floor.

What can be done to make first floor more in line with temperature on 2nd and 3rd floor.

Thanks.

    temp difference

We would normally start witht the radiator vents and make sure they are working. If everything is in normal working order, balancing the system is your easiest alternative.

I just helped a buddy get his system balanced floor to floor. Here's what we did: made sure main vent(s) were in good shape. Actually replaced with Hoffman 75 new main vents ($55 each). Insulate all basement piping to save money and make sure steam makes it to the rads. Replace all rad vents (many old, some painted shut) with Hoffman 1A adjustable ones ($23 each). Set all vents to maximum (6) vent size. Let the system stabilize and measure your temp everywhere. Where ever the system is running warmest, adjust the venting rate down... slowly, one step at a time and give the system time to restabilize. If you do this methodically, you will get it well balanced and joy will be your reward.
