Measure the length and diameter of that main, and we'll tell you what you need. If you have any other mains in that system, measure them too.

I'M NEW TO HOME OWNERSHIP (2 FAMILY) (STEAM--SINGLE PIPE)
AND I'M TRYING TO BALANCE THE SYSTEM AND PROVIDE MORE HEAT TO THE TENANTS(2nd FLOOR). I'M IN PROCESS OF CHANGING
THE STEAM VENTS ON ALL RADIATORS. I READ ABOUT THE "MAIN
LINE VENT"........THE ONLY ONE I LOCATE IS ON A UNION WHERE
THE MAIN AND THE RETURN MEET. WHEN THE BOILER IS IN OPERATION,STEAM IS FLOWING FROM THIS "VENT"(TWO SIDED,LIKE A TRAIN WHISTLE).IS THIS NORMAL? THERE ARE ALSO RUST DEPOSITS IN AREA OF VALVE.....SHOULD THIS BE REPLACED?
    THANKS TO ALL!

    Not normal

You could try cleaning it by boiling in vinegar but sounds to me like it should be changed.
