More Cold on the Way!

Just when you thought you may have caught up a bit with those freezeups and no-heat calls, well........you are not! There is more on the way and colder than we've seen for a long time. Cuddle up and stay warm folks!

Cold weather and heat loss calcs

Does this mean we get to see if the design points for heat calcs are accurate? No, wait, maybe it's the other way around. Are the heat calcs correct for the design point?

As I understand it, I used -10 for the coldest outdoor temp for 70 inside. Should the heating devices (boiler) be running constantly when we reach -10?

If the calc software has a 20% "safety" factor built in, should we get to, say, -20 before the continuous run point is reached?

Does any software take into account the effect of wind, perhaps a geographical correction for "average" winter winds?

The previous steam boiler used to be able to make it 90 inside with single pane windows and a door that let snow blow in, all at -20, but what a fuel monster!

When we lived in FL, when the week was full of the worst wicked hot days the AC ran about 95% of the time. Seems strange now looking at the reverse in winter in Maine.

    Parameter's ?

Wind ? insulation ? efficiency ? (Kids) ? Things that go "bump" in the night ? Good heat loss no matter how tight you did it, is just a best guess. Mark Eatherton has spent a lot upon his measureing those parameters. Just know that it is dar-n cold and when you get down to seeing the inside temp drop, Close that window. Hang that blanket over it. get the kids to shut the door, look at the boiler , and the heating elements for good clean operation, and spring is comeing! the days are getting longer! bigugh

    Design point

raises an interesting question. How accurate is a heat loss calculation? Monday I found out. My wife rises every morning before I do. Monday as she called me she said it was cooler in the bed room than usual. My first thought was the boiler has failed for some reason. I asked her if she had hot water and her answer told me she did. So I knew the boiler was working. When I turned on the TV I noticed a temperature of 16*. I had designed the radiant floor for 20* outside temp. and 108* supply water. I checked the t-stat and it was showing 66* with a set point of 69*. I marveled at the accuracy of the heat loss calculation and the fact that the outside temp was 4* below design and the inside temp was 3* below t-stat set point. I jerked on my pants and hurried to the basement to check the supply water temp. It was setting dead on 110* to the master bed room. I adjusted the water temperature to 120*. This morning, Tuesday, the temperature outside was again at 16* but the master bed room was at 69*. Wouldn't you know it. My wife complained that it was a bit warm. Would I do something about it? "Sure sweet heart", I lowered the set point by a degree. Now I will have to re-tweak the supply water temp. 120* is probably 5* too much. Love that radiant!!

    money ??

I sold twenty five slip couplings , I don't know how much money that makes ???

I would rather have normal weather and sell and upgrade heating systems.
