Thank you. Finally an explanation. I had been asking at my local plumbing supply house and among various tradespeople and everyone would just say "it's against code", etc. but no one knew WHY exactly. I always like to know the "why" behind everything. Thanks for the insight.

Why is it against code to use galv. pipe for steam systems? What are the specific properties or problems with it as opposed to black iron?

Galvanizing ?
Steam systems usually remove the zink coating inside the Gal. pipe and place it as a sludge in the boiler, dirting it! It has to do with the Ph of the steam and water in a steam system. black iron resists this just fine.0 -
True enough, but any veteran boilerman will confess
to using galvanized in a pinch...you know, sunday night, 9pm.....5 degrees outside. My father-in-law even "liberated" a piece of 2" galvanized pipe from a chain link fence behind a garage to finish piping a steamer one cold and hoary night. Mad Dog
