Waterhammer in Autofeeder

My waterpipes in the basement are shaking whenever the autofeeder starts to add water to my steamboiler. This only occurs when the valve just opens a bit. When I blow off the boiler fast so that the valve opens all the way, it does not occur. When I open the manual bypass there is no waterhammer. Should I look for the cause in the valve or should I just install a Waterhammer arrestor in front of the feeder ? In the beginning it was a nice feature since no matter where I am in the house, I always know that my feeder is working. After a while it get's a little bit annoying though. I am sure that there is some kind of long term effect on the pipes also.
