High pH

Member Posts: 6
Have been battling banging pipes and several cold radiators. I'm thinking the returns are somewhat clogged. The water level also fluctuates quite a bit while it is firing. Checked pH with litmus paper and it looks around 10.0. I'm sure vinegar would help, however the original manual for the American-Standard ArcoLiner advises against adding vinegar. What causes high pH and how can I lower it? Thanks.

you can use
swimming pool chemicals to lower it..but 10 isn't that bad..0 -
Ph
When you heat water, disolved oxygen comes out and as the water cools, it re-absorbs CO2. This is what causes the PH to lower.

Ph is not your problem.
Whether you have a steam or HW boiler, as said 10, isn't bad. That is the level where most metals corrode the least. Litmus paper is subjective though.
Don't do the vinegar0 -
You are fine
ph from 8-10 is just in the range prefered. I've heard some say 11 if ok in steam, ant that seems to be where it ends up after a TSP flush.
Neutral ph if fine for swimming pools, and eliminates eye irritation, but closed loop hydronice want to lean towards the alkline side.
You'll fine all the inhibited glycols and hydronic treatments leave you in this range.
Save the vinegar for your salads
