One pipe system can you shut off radiators in a one pipe system

Is it ok to turn off radiators in rooms not being used? It is a one pipe system!

    Technically, yes

    but if the shutoff valve is leaking, some steam will get into the radiator where it won't be able to get back out after turning to water. This will make the radiator fill with water and bang. The same thing will happen if the valve is left part-way open.

    I've had good luck with installing an adjustable vent on such a radiator and turning it all the way down- if the air can't get out, the steam can't get in. Vent-Rite makes the #1 adjustable vent with a hand-operated wheel that you can adjust without using tools.

    Make sure the system pressure is set as low as it will go, otherwise the air trapped in the radiator will be compressed and some steam will get in. This is best handled by a pro, who will be able to suggest other energy-conserving measures as well as test your equipment for Carbon Monoxide.
