Pigtail/Ptrol Relationship

Can someone provide explanation of what pigtail role is in heating cycle? I have a brass angle (vs straight) pigtail. Water line at rest comes almost to top of loop (consistent with boiler operating manual), but just below bottom of Pressuretrol at other end of pigtail, off a Tee). Pigtail/Ptrol installed off of LWCO per manual....

Is it air, steam and/or water that hits the Pressuretrol diaphram on increasing pressure? Should entire pigtail be HOT (vs warm) during cycle? Just cleaned out pigtail last week now trying to properly set/monitor pressuretrol consistent with some of the recent discussions on this site. Any insight appreciated.

is to hold some water and keep the steam itself from hitting the gauge or control.

    So...

air trapped above the water (either from condensation or added when the pigtail is first installed) trapped in the p-tail loop presses on the diaphragm. The trapped slug of water moves away from the boiler in the loop a little as the pressure rises and the trapped air compresses, but everywhere sees the same pressure.
