Wet head bass player rocks the world! (PAH)

Last Saturday, I stood out in the cold with four young men who were staking their claim for fame and fortune. It was a cattle-call deal with hundreds of contestants lined up for a two-minute audition. Only the folks trying out were allowed inside - we over-18 types were there to sign for the minors. The folks who have the Apollo Theater in NYC were in town seeking new talent. Just 15 would be picked for a night on the Strand's giant stage & an opportunity to play for 1,500 next month. One winner will go on to the Apollo.

Imagine my surprise to find that the group I'd stood so long in the cold with, Neutopia - a delightful rock band that writes 100% of their own material, was chosen.

Why me? The bass player is a Jr. Wet Head and, at 17, can solder with the best of them. He's installed several radiant systems too. What a ham! Must get that from his mother(g).

Come Feb 6th, cross your fingers and cheer for the band!

Their first CD has just been pressed. $5 + shipping & handling will get a copy. Cripes - even the parents have to pay - stinking little business-minded punks. I thought I'd kept Ellen's book hidden away from his sight!

    Sweet !

yet another option for your comfortable retirement. Living off the sons royalties! Much nicer than fighting city hall!

Best of luck to the boys in the band.

    thanks

It's going to be a hoot!

BTW, I'm not fighting City Hall. Just doing my citizen thing by speaking out within the politically correct forum at the council meeting. Citizens are permitted five minutes to address council on anything they want to discuss or speak about.

If the fees stand the ire being brought to bear (I'm not the only one to be vocal regarding these new fees - the restaurant folks already managed to get their "lit candle tax" repealed) still stand when the dust settles, we'll pay them and do what any business must do when costs increase - pass them on to the customers.

    I'm telling ya

PAH = Politician At Heart :) I used "fighting city hall" as a cliche :)

PBS had an interesting interview with Helen Thomas. She mentioned something to the effect if the press doesn't question elected officials they become kings or dictators. Then they tax and rule to their hearts desire.

Same goes for citizens at the local level of government, I feel.

I think you are the right stuff to question them, apparantly they think plumbers are rolling in dough, to single out that trade. Hopefully you will have a service call at the mayors home someday and show him the "fees" required to be in business these days.

    Hmmm,

Helen Thomas, now there's a real middle of the road person. Excellent journalist, but I'm not to sure that any of them are the right people to give advice about the government.

As a past elected official, and now appointed, who has seen it from the other side, the Council should value Dave's opinions and advice. Nothing was worse than discussing policy week after week without any public opinion, vote it in and then have naysayers come out of the wood work.

An honest POL (there are still some out there) will listen.

Go Dave and in between meetings "ROCK-ON"

    Good Luck

    To the band.

Seems to me a few years ago one of our own was talking about his daughter. Seems MTV was giving her a chance.

Does the name Michelle Branch sound familair.

    Tell the boys good luck.

    Rock em !

I see the press, and journalist's, job, in part, to question authority. Actually the press, as a group, are about the only citizens that can directly question a President. When it's done on TV the voters are give an opportunity to decide for themselves, without any "spin" from the press.

Seem our current pres doesn't like an informed public, Having only given 11 press conferences since taking office. His dad granted something like 60 some over the same period of time, while in office.

To much "behind the scenes" leadership, in my opinion. makes it tough on voters :)

Enough on politics, I better get some work done.

    Thanks Scott,

Part of me wants to see them hit it big and have their dreams come true. But, given the things I see on MTV and read about regarding behavior that's out of whack (IMHO), the other part of me doesn't want that to happen. At least not at this age.

Watching Mike play on stage is a treat. You can tell he's loving what he's doing and his personality shines through. Last week, while playing a gig, he leaped off of the stage into the audience & never missed a note. Kept right on playing from the floor level area. Cracks me up.

They won't play "covers", which are songs done by popular groups & instead compose all of their own music.

    Enough?

Come on Hotrod,we're just getting started. lol

I will respond to one issue: President George Herbert Walker Bush had 60 press conferences and got beat, President George Walker Bush has had 11 (I trust your math) and has a favorable rating and "should" (hopefully, will) win re-election.

Of coarse, coming from Taxachusetts, the home of Mr. Tax and Spend Kennedy, it's a lonely world being an independent for a Republican.

    Dave...

What type of music do they play? Who do they compare with (P.O.D., Van Halen, etc.).
Where do I send $5.00 & P/H to sample them?
    Thanks,
    Al K.

    Ok, just 1 more

Yet another PBS show dealing with campaign finance, claimed the largest funder of GW current re-election is Enron, currently in bankrupcy. Wonder how the Enron stockholders feel about that! Coal and oil coughed up (pun intended) about 11 mill for his first campaign.

Diesel jumped 20 cents a gallon OVERNIGHT, here. I'm told most of our supply comes from Texas. Could be the big oil companies are pulling together some additional scratch for re-election donations :)

    Wish we

could go on but I agree, this is Dave's thread.

You've certainly thrown out (up) some interesting Democratic points. Some other time for rebuttal.

It's great the band is doing it's own material. Looking forward to seeing them at the Centrum in Worcester some day.

    no ownership

Don't stop on my account, I'm enjoying your comments.

I once worked for a guy who owned a business he called Buzzard's Knob Press. I was just 16, but knew my way around a camera and had some skills with running a Heidelberg offset/letterset press. He was an incredible idealist/businessman, which is like a Jeckle/Hyde thing.

**** was always going to township meetings to rail against anything he saw as being out of line - especially if it affected an individual or group that couldn't muster a voice in their own defense. The local politicians saw him as a thorn in their sides. But, no matter what - **** would stand up to be heard and speak his mind.

The funny thing is, when he died every stinking one of them eulogized him for being someone they admired most.

We drank Dip-It once during a break from work. We both put cream & sugar in our coffee back then and thought it was the worst coffee Jeannie (his wife) had ever made. She hollered out from another wing of the house not to drink what was in the electric pot. Turned out the stuff was poison! My God how we laughed at that memory.

He decided to build his own wood boiler in later years and made its top the kitchen countertop (you'd have liked him HR). He called me to help with the control issues. The damn thing was about eight feet wide by two feet deep and three feet high. We tied it into his baseboard HW heating system and he tinkered with it for the last few years of his life. The radiant heat given off by that mass of steel (he welded it himself) was a delight. The kitchen was the gathering place anyway. Smoking finally caught up with him in the end. I used to think he was nuts for tilting against those township windmills. Now I understand his great need to speak up and those many attempts at making a difference. He'll be on my mind Tuesday night.

    The CD

is being pressed & not in yet - I'll post that when it's available.

He plays the upright bass with the orchestra and a Jazz bass with Neutopia. He also plays the acoustic guitar. He and another musically inclined friend did a rap song at MendonStock that had me rolling in the aisle - and I hate rap music as a general rule. The first year he played the 3/4 bass with the orchestra, he could hardly reach the neck. Now he towers over it! The orchestra has gone from sounding like a bag of cats (sixth grade) to sounding more like a philharmonic orchestra. Their teachers have earned more than one set of angel's wings methinks!

Me? I play stupid and do a fine job on that instrument!
