open system

We are going to be doing some outdoor wood boiler hook-ups. My understanding is that a standard centrifugal circulator becomes a standard pump in an open, non-pressurized system. If so, can I still use the same curves as I use in a closed system? Logic tells me that I can but I want to be sure. Thanks,Matt

    well...

a circulator is a circulator is a circulator. I believe your "understanding", doesn't. The circulator still moves water the same way, it does not lift it or pull it, it circulates it. Open or closed system, it's the same characteristics.

    Pumo away

OWF units at atmospheric become the PONPC. Air can be tough on your circs - pipe for positive pressures. The curves won't change, just the pressures. Enjoy....Dan

    Dan,
I'm going to be putting some OWF'S in and after reviewing some OWF manufacturers piping layouts for add on units I'm amazed at some of their suggestions. Some manufacturers actually tell the installer to turn down the fill valve to 0 psi. Obviously they are making your existing system open. I realize that they put anti-oxygen chemicals in, but if I was a homeowner having a unit installed I would never want an open system potentially eating away at my existing system. I guess they don't promote heat exchangers for the cost - I don't know. Sorry for the rambling ,but this is just one of several snafu's I've seen in some OWF man. literature.
On the other hand, We just installed a unit about 2 months for a guy. He has an electric heat pump and was budgeted with the utility for $285/mo. We installed a duct x-changer and tied the domestic in to the OWF dom. coil. He just got his latest bill for $92. The utility called his house last week to inquire about the reduced electric consumption. They said that they are going to send a tech out to check the meter. Gotta love it!

    Not all are equal

Within the world of outdoor wood furnaces there is lots of different thinking. Most brands will have limited, if any, exposure to atmosphere so once you've dealt with the original O2 you won't need too much ongoing water treatment. 400 series stainless is used by quite a few producers. If you have concerns incorporate a HX, indirect buffer or similar appliance. When wood is the fuel of choice outdoors is a great place to burn it. Enjoy......Dan
