Moving Main Vents

I want to move my main vents away from the elbows on the returns, fifteen inches as suggested. Can I splice into the returns with same pipe and diameter and use compression nuts to connect everything. I don't have the ability to thread piper and was wondering if this would work? ed

I want to do this too

But I want to move mine up about 30 feet just after the last takeoff. I can't see a way to do this properly myself though. Seem like I'm going to have to get someone to cut and rethread the pipes.

My new gorton #2's stay too warm near the boiler and close too early. All my venting gets done by a radiator up on the 2nd floor. Sounds like hell up there.

My mains are not vented at all. Not sure where I would place them. From reading info on this site they should be 15" before the end of the mains. My boiler is in the middle of my basement and I have what looks like a "T" where the bottom of the "T" goes into the boiler and the top of the "T" has the risers for the rads. I guess 2 loops is the best way to describe it. One on the right and another on the left, sharing a common pipe for steam and another one for wet return.

    My Dry Return

I am no pro but this is how I did mine on my dry return. I cracked the union then replaced the elbow with a tee. I now have 2 Gortons up on that dry return but the pic only shows one. And it works great. Good luck.
