Heil Furnace Efficiency

My mom has a Heil upflow furnace, model HUGD130CH01, with an input of 130,000 BTU/hr that was installed in 1980. Does anyone know the efficiency of the furnace? Was wondering what output this furnace produces.

She has had no big problems but I was thinking that the payback for a new furnace might justify a replacement. With this weather, maybe sooner than later.

    I can't tell you exactly, but...

    a furnace of that era would have been in the 55% to 65% efficiency range. Also with my experience on Heil furnaces of that age, I can almost guarantee that the Heat Exchanger in that furnace has numerous cracks in the metal, which could pose a Carbon Monoxide and or fire hazzard issue. I would get that H.X. looked at immediatly by a qualified trained heating contractor to determine if it's still safe to operate at all. Efficiency aside, that furnace could be dangerous and just waiting to cause a major safety problem.

    I agree with glenn. if it has a draft hood then its 60% eff. and probably has hair line cracks. a new 90% eff. could save 600.00 a year in gas.

    Jim -Moms more then got her money out of that furnace. In fact every day she runs it cost her money. Get it checked for CO and then start getting replacement quotes. Best Wishes J.Lockard

    I agree with the other guys as to the likely condition and eff of the old unit. I do not know if you are "in the business" so, a couple additional thoughts. If you are going to replace with a similar or like system you should go with a condensing (90-5%)unit venting with PVC and make sure it is a two pipe system. One combustion air and one exhaust, or sealed combustion in other workds. DO NOT replace it with another 125k unit. Get a real heat loss calc done and I bet you find the place can take a 75kbtu (130,000 x.60=78,000) unit for replacement. I would highly recommend a two stage furnace. Better economy and comfort.
