Banging Pipes

What is the cause of banging heat pipes within the walls of a 100 unit apartment building (14 floors).

The banging is not occuring in every apartment. However it is occuring in adjacent apartments (on lower floors).

Been told that pitching the radiators may help (but not solve) the problem.

So what else could solve the problem entirely?

Could it be a boiler problem itself? If so...what?

Thanks for your input and potential solutions

    water hammer

It sounds like you have a two pipe steam system because of the height of the building. If so, failed steam traps can create water hammer. Were are you located? How old is the building? Have the steam traps ever been repaired?

Water Hammer is the arch enemy in a steam system.

In Dan Holohan's book (the lost art of steam heating) there is a great explanation of the causes and the consequences of water hammer in a steam system.

    100 unit

If you own, manage, or operate a 100 unit building you need to call in a professional to assess your system. You probably have various system problems that need to be individually addressed. Don't bean count on this one. Spend the money and get it diagnosed and repaired. If you can fund this building you can fund the tenants comfort. The boiler and delivery??....Well that's another story altogether!
