I had the pleasure of working with the good people at Wolesley Canada. I talked for a few hours, and then I got to watch Robert Bean. He spoke for two hours about aspects of the hydronics industry that I have never considered. It was a real eye-opening experience and my head has been buzzing with ideas ever since. Robert's a futurist. He sees things most of us miss.
If you have the opportunity to see him, don't miss it.
And if you have the opportunity to HIRE him for your group, don't pass it by. This guy inspires, and he'll makes you think on a brand-new level. Great stuff!

A suggestion to American hydronic manufacuturers
Bring in Robert and have him speak to your people. Trust me on this. It's very provocative stuff.Retired and loving it.0 -
Enlighten us a bit...
like what and how??????
Enquiring minds want to know........0 -
For instance:
There's a part where he talks about why the public doesn't embrace hydroincs. He refers to survival models, which is sort of a model of what people expect. He shows a photo of a Harley that has the gas tank under the seat, but Harly still included a shape of a gas tank where folks expect one to be. Smart. Robert then asks the people in the room to describe a fire extinguisher. They do.
While he was talking, I started to imagine a fire extinguisher that was in the shape of a cube and painted green. Who would use it? Made me think.
He asks people to describe a furnace. Everyone decribes it as a rectangular box.
Then he asks us to describe a hydronic heating system, and every jaw in the room drops.
I was thinking about this last Saturday when I was working with the lads on the three boilers at Suffolk Community College. We were making it all up as we went along.
That's the way hydronics gets done, and it's one of the reasons why the public has no idea what it is.
It also dawned on me while he was talking that, with radiant, we strive for a comfort system that's totally invisible. Contrast this with the European panel radiator business. They're selling the function and the form.
Same industry, opposite goals.
It was two hours of this sort of thinking. He makes you swoon.
Folks, hire the Bean!Retired and loving it.0 -

Form & Function
Maybe someday we'll get more Americans to see the beauty here WITHOUT saying, "Too bad that radiator had to be there."0 -
actually
looking in the miror.........
its too bad that air grill had to be there!
that radiator should keep those had towels dry, and cosy warm!0 -
Your story is more important than your product - ALWAYS!
Thanks Kim.
It's great to be part of your future.
Once more I can never say enough about all you fine folks at Wolseley...without (then) Westburne's support in the days following our purchase of a local agency business and its profitable growth into a fabricator and design house we couldn't have attracted the subsequent buyer (Danfoss) for the business. Through it all the leadership and management team at each of the branches inspired us to always raise the benchmark.
While others were trying to tell us how to run our business Wolseley showed us how they succesfully ran theirs.
Hats off to Brian Wilcox & Company (AGAIN!!!) for allowing Dave Heath (aka heatingguru@shaw.ca, aka Better to Ask For Forgiveness than Permission) et al the opportunity to share their vision and bring in Dan Holohan...I was just glad to be along for the ride.
Boundaries are for those who are afraid of tearing their pants while they think about climbing over the fence.
How many ripped jeans are in your closet?
Keep climbing...scratches heal.

p.s. the average consumers acceptance of hydronics makes this much sense and has a simlar affect on their brains.0 -
swooning...
is what happens when Dan buys you a drink in the saloon.
Thanks as always Mr. Holohan.
Here's to worthy causes and making a difference.
Cheers,

sound like the proverbial "one mule calling the other long ears"
Two fabulous guys who are willing to work together for the betterment of all.....unselfishly!
Change is NEVER easy, but the ripped trousers are worth it...
I have to think back to the times when I have resisted the most and then look at all the positives that have come out of the pain of being strecthed.

The Wolseley Heating Meetings in Vancouver went well with the attendance of these two fine gentelmen (Dan & the Bean). Thanks to both of them for the insperational talks.
I've known Robert for some time and he has always been a pleasure to talk with, and to hear what he has in mind of the heating future.
Dan your stories from your past where great to listen to also. Very informative and gives me a different view on how to help some of my customers.
Thanks again to Dan & Robert.

Dan's and RB's participation
Dan, it was indeed a great pleasure to have you make that long and exhausting trip to Vancouver, B.C. last week. The 35 individuals from Wolseley Western Canada comprised of over 450 years of Hydronic / HVAC experience and enjoyed your speaking engagement. I know that they will take back to each of their respected territories the stories and yarns that you so tell well. Thanks again from all of us at Wolseley Western Canada. I believe you will see myself and Ed Sushynski from our Edmonton office attending Wetstock IV in Baltimore. We are planning on bringing 4 Mechanical contractors with us. Bring on the Canadians!!!
Robert(The Bean), as Dan says in the upper post, you always bring a differant perspective to the hydronics business and for that matter any business that recognizes survival form in products. Great discussion as always, eye opener and thought provoking! Bring it on!!!
Both of you gentleman are a credit to our industry and if we all could even take a small percentage of your enthusiasm and passion that you have, we all would benefit for it.
