Good Morning America CO segment saved lives!!

You may remember a couple of weeks ago I'd posted that we had sent a fellow from Good Morning America a Monoxor II so they could do a segment on CO.
ABC forwarded this email to us from one of thier viewers:
"Good Morning America helped to save our lives.
Early on Christmas Eve morning, my husband awoke with a pounding heart. He got up and very shortly passed out. He came around, and shortly after he did, he realized he was probably suffering the effects of carbon monoxide because he had seen a segment on this killer on "Good Morning America".
In minutes I also passed out twice, but he managed to get me outside to the fresh air. He called 911 and the volunteer fire department showed up, followed by an ambulance.
We were put on oxygen and were admitted to the hospital where we were on oxygen for about 6 hours to bring our levels down.
We had a CO detector, but it was still in the package and when my husband put the battery in..in the midst of
our experience...the detector didn't work.
On our way home from the hospital we purchased two new ones. Upon checking, it was found our furnace had malfunctioned. This is a very brief description of what
happened to us, but I just want to thank you for the segment on carbon monoxide because this is what prompted my husband to identify the danger very early.
Thank you!!!"
Nice to hear their 'customer education' had some impact.

That must make you
feel ten feet tall. I sure would have that reaction if I had helped save someone's life. The couple were saved by being in the right place at the right time and the TV show making an impact on the husband. Hope the rest of your year has more success stories like this one. Stupid deaths of families and children are hard to abide. Particularly when you know the deaths could have been prevented.0 -
To tell the truth
I had very little involvement getting this together, Jim Bussard with customer service was the one instrumental in working with ABC.
Way to go Jim!!!0 -
Actually
Actually, I don't feel all that good about it.
First off, I have to wonder if the contractor who installed/serviced their equipment tested - I've got $100 that says not....
Secondly, even if they had installed the first CO alarm, it would not have given them any indication of a problem because it apparently didn't work, brand new, right out of the box.
What's worse is that according to the GRI study (linked from the CO-Experts low level monitor website) on The Reliability and Performance of CO Alarms, there is a 38% chance that the new alarms she mentioned purchasing don't work either and even if they do, if they are UL/2034 approved alarms, they only provide minimal protection....
Not a very rosy picture at all.0 -
All the more reason to speak at ISH-NA
Drop me a line Rudy, I've got some more details. Don't be shy, take some credit -- nice story!0 -
Wars are won
one battle at a time.
I think that we heard the first shot.
Kudos to Bacharach!

Well you inspired me to
call the editor of our local paper who I happen to know. I asked him in the kindess yet hard way I know how, to do a story on CO. I suggested if he saved one life it would be worth the ink and the space. I also gave him this site and told him the threads he should look for and what he would see. I also mentioned googles search specific deal on subjects like Mark Hunt is receiving. I should know in a few days if I was successful. I feel justified in bringing it to his attention after reading all the stories posted here.
It is galling to me that innocent people are dieing through no fault of there own or at least in many cases, pure ignorance. Life is hard enough without stupid deaths that could have been prevented. I am even more upset when I see the number of children who are dead due to this leathal yet invisible thief of human life.0 -
nice ad on TV
Saw a nice ad this morning on TV. Lots of plumbing, heating, and cooling ads remind me of the ones for car dealerships :-) but this was different.
Basic message was "as part of every comprehensive furnace check and tuneup, we do a CO test of every combustion appliance in your home" and they showed the tech checking the water heater, stove, gas fireplace, etc.
Very factual, professional commercial.

I hope
that here were some "professionals" watching.
