The TACO 218 Universal Flocheck on my hot water circulator makes a funny noise when operating. Sounds like a loose marble in there.
Is that normal?

noisey flow check
No John, it's not normal. The answer depends on several things.....were in the system is it located? Did this jsut start happening, or has it been an ongoing issue? If it just started, what has changed in the system? It could be just a defect or something caught on the plug to make it vibrate when the circ is on. You can always try the old"gentle love tap" quick fix, but try shutting off the circ and opening the check with the thumb screw and then reseat it. If that doesn't work, call in a pro to repair or replace it.

it is located directly above the TACO cartridge circulator on its way from the boiler and onto the rest of the house.
it has seemed to get noisier since last weeks very frigid temperatures.
sounds like a loose marble bouncing around in there.
does the system need to be shut down immediately or can it wait a few days (temps are dropping here in NY again tonight).
thanks!0 -
rattle in check
john, I have found low boiler water pressure to be a common cause. Pressure should be 15-20 psi.
Air in lines another,

I would almost think that possibly the pump is cavitating. It usually sounds like gravel or in this case marbles... Is the pipe undersized? You can tell by slowly closing a ball or gate valve on the supply side of the pump then see if the noise goes away..0 -
yep, its sounds like gravel bouncing around in there. Quite a racket.
but the heat still works, hot water is flowing.
I'll have to have my local oil company come over and take a look (I have a service contract).
thanks!0
