The Right Way to Insulate Steam Mains

Hal

Gentlemen,

I have many issues with the oil-fired steam heat system in my four story, 1899 Brooklyn row house. The one thing I hope to do myself is insulate the steam mains in the basement. I am a competent do-it-yourseler who knows his limits. I leave plumbing and electric to the pros :-)

What is the correct material to insulate steam mains in the basement? What should I ask for when I get to the home center? I also need to insulate the near-boiler piping. What other tools and supplies will make the job easier?

Also, I need suggestions for encapsulting asbestos insulation that is currently in position. Where it exists, it is mostly intact.

Thanks

    search on this site...

This subject has been covered a few times over the last couple of months. If you search for insulate or insulation or fiberglass you should find what you need. When you do your search click on "complete thread" or words to that effect that show up in your search results to see the entire thread. Good Luck.

    Insulation

Insulation: 1" thick fiberglass, comes in 3ft lengths. Cut it in a cheap plastic/wood miter box w/ a cheap knife -- it WILL dull it. Search here for more details.

Asbestos incapsulation (or removal, if req'd): call an asbestos remediation contractor. They'll do it right.
