Copper fin vs. converted cast radiators

I have a 1950's house with the cast iron radiators with a monoflo loop system feeding them. I am replacing the boiler and was wondering if there is any reasons not to re-use the cast radiators. Which is a better choice with todays technology. Is there a formula to how much fin is needed to replace one cast iron? Can a run a little of both on the same loop? Can I get enough heated water through a finned radiator with a 1/2" loop? Thanks for the info

    fin tube vs rads

stay with the monflow loop and rads better heat that way and no you cant mix them on the same loop you cant feed baseboard using 1/2 copper pipes not enough btus will get to the fin tubes

    By all means...............

keep the cast iron, but dump the mono-flow system. Use Wirsbo MultiCor (or equivalent, I guess) and run a supply and return line to each radiator. Bring them all back to a central manifold location. Easily zoned and each radiator is assured of getting the same water temperature. Add outdoor reset and TRVs for ultimate control.

    constant circ.

I would keep the monoflo system, pipe the boiler with a mixing valve W/oudoor reset and costant circulation.
We do it this way all the time with CI Rads.

Nice even heat. You can use the existing t-stat as high limit
in the event there is a large gathering and internal load increase.

Put the circ on a outdoor stat.

Protect the boiler with proper piping design.
It depends on the boiler you use.

    DPB

If you do use TRV's which is a very good choice.Make sure you pipe in a Diff.Press.bypass valve to protect the circ.

    Why dump the monoflow?

I'd think just installing TRV's and outdoor reset would provide a real slick setup?

By all means, keep the old things. The next best heat to radiant floors.

    TRV's ???

I am a little confused - can I dump the monoflows, install tee"s instead and install the TRV's at each supply line to the radiator. I am not trying to get to complicated. I allready fabricated a seperate zone (w/monoflows)for upstairs. I also will have indirect dhw of this boiler. Thanks for the help
