pressurtrol settings incorrect?

After reading the Got Steam Heat book for Homeowners, I did a little exploring around the system. I have one pipe steam with a coal converted boiler (the house is c. 1850). The pressurtrol cut-in is set to 2, and the diff is set to 1. What does this do to my system? The book says .5 for cut-in. The heating is fair, needs a little cleaning, may

It should be set as low as it will go

Those systems were designed to heat the house on the coldest day of the year with no more than 2 pounds pressure. Anything more wastes fuel.

If the system is only "fair" in the way it heats, you would do well to have a good steam man look it over. Often it can be made to run better for much less than you'd spend on a new boiler. Try the Find a Professional page of this site to locate one near you.

Would the current setting cause any serious damage or noticeably annoying problems? Will I notice a change in my system when I change the cut-in to .5? Just curious.

    honeywell PA404 pressuretrol

I a singlepipe steam system with a gas fired boiler. The boiler is a weil macclain and is 19 years old. This system has two pressuretrols mounted on it. One has cutin set to .5 with the differential switch set to 1 The other has cut in set to 2 and differential set to 1 . I have never seen this type of setup. I was thinking that the two controls should be set to the same settings? any ideas?
  • Dave is it a Powerpile system?

If it is then the second pressuretrol is designed to shut the pilot system off in the event of a run away boiler. That auxillary pressuretrol should be set for 14 lbs off 9 lbs on. Set the cut in to 9 and differential to 5. Make sure it is the one wired into the pilot generator circuit not the thermostat circuit.
