I have the same system in my house. Steam Head told me that it is a 2-pipe air vent system. It was the 'bridge' between one pipe with vents and 2 pipe vapor. The diagram is in The Lost Art of Steam Heat. I had similar problems in that radiators weren't heating and some water hammer, too. Changing all of the radiator vents to Gortons, Replacing the main vent with a Gorton #2, cranking down the pressurtol, replacing a couple of clogged returns, and insulating the main has my house quiet and warm now.

that would make it heat well, if the boiler is big enough.

    That's a hybrid 1-pipe/2-pipe air-vent system

I'll bet the bigger radiators were connected 2-pipe, so there wouldn't be so much counterflow in the steam connections.

As Thad and Noel have said, low pressure (ounces rather than pounds) and proper venting will make this system work well, especially if the 2-pipe radiator returns connect together above the boiler's water line. Low pressure will help keep the steam from getting into the returns where it can cause banging. This is a great place to use a Vaporstat instead of a Pressuretrol.

Vent your steam mains well. Measure the length and diameter of each steam main, and we can tell you what it needs. Do NOT vent the return lines the way you would in a Vapor system, since this would only let steam get into the returns.

Please help! I have 1 pipe steam radiators on 1st and 2nd floor. I put in adjustible vents, and the heat from all the radiators is still on full bore. I tried them all on setting 0 and all on setting 1. no difference. Any advice? Thank you. John M
