Banging

I had banging with a new one pipe boiler that was installed this summer. The venting was coming from one of the dry returns. Could not get rid of it. Vented the mains with a Gorton #2 on each one. Put Gortons on each radiator based on their diagram. Still banging. Finally went back to the pressuretrol which was just about at .5 and set it dead level. Then went to the cut out and moved that from 1 to 1.5. Next thing, no more banging. Seems to run quieter. Real nice. Whole house heats in about a twenty minute cycle. Thanks for the help Ed

    smoke at chimney

With a new system installed I'm seeing more smoke coming out the chimney. I know white smoke could indicate a crack in the boiler. I'm not losing any water, but I'm about the only chimney on the street that seems to be smoking so much. Pressuretrol is cranked down, cut in .5 cut out 1.5. Gorton #2's on the returns, and Gorton 4,5,6,C and D's based on geography. Is it normal for a new steam boiler to give off a lot of smoke? Thanks Ed

    oil or gas

If oil no smoke, if gas what looks like smoke is water vapor, the more effecient the boiler the more the smoke look. There were a few old designs that had a steam vent to the chimney, pretty easy to check.

Oil. It's cold hear and was wondering if that's why. So Oil heat should not give up any vapor up the chimney? Ed
