Steam valve threads

I took the radiator off an old 1 1/4 steam pipe to install a carpet and decided to change the old valve while the radiator was off. The home depot replacements were all copper and the gaps between the threads were wider than that of the old pipe/valve. I was told that there are no other threads. Should I force it on and use it anyway? I doubt it but I'm not sure what my options are. Any suggestions? It's too cold to keep the heat off.

    First of all...

Get out of the Home Dumpo and get to a real plumbing house or an old line hardware store (look in your local yellow pages). Try and find one that says "In Business since 1929" or something like that. Then take the old valve with you and make sure that you need a new one (hopefully you didn't wreck the valve or pipe when you removed it). They should be able to help you out. Whatever you do don't try and force a new valve with the wrong thread on to the old pipe - you'll be going backwards big time and likely have to start replacing pipes, ripping up floors etc. It doesn't sound like your in too deep of a hole right now so remember the first rule of being in a hole is to stop digging ;). Good luck. BTW we've all been there at one time or another on some project so don't feel too bad.

    Valves

I think most of my old steam valves don't work anymore. When I need to take a radiator off to work on a room during heating season, I just duct tape up the outlet of the valve. You won't get any steam coming up the riser. Probably only works for one-pipe steam though.
