closing off rooms and valves?

I know that with forced air heating, you can close vents and close off rooms that are seldom used in order to save on heating costs. Can you do anything similar with steam heat? We have a 3600 sq. ft. house with many unused areas (at least for the time being) and very high heating costs. If possible we'd love to save money by not heating unused space! Any suggestions would be much appreciated!
