1st steamer of the new year
It was a very rare occasion - the boiler was removed before we got there . Which was a blessing , the 2nd pic shows the stairs we had to use .
The whole basement was about 5 1/2 foot tall , except for the support beams which hung even lower .
Someone connected the 2 mains with a bull headed tee , and in copper . We decided to start from scratch .

Peerless
ECT 3 . We split the new one in 3 sections to carry them down . We were able to get the skim plug out of the back , it beats a 3/4 skim in front . And we replaced about 15 feet of return pipe buried in the concrete .
Those stairs and the low ceiling made it hard to maneuver in and out of the basement . We thought it was pretty bad , but I guess you can get used to it - the homeowner had the washer and dryer down there too .

I had that perfect job
the day after New Years - nice little 2 zone boiler in a room off the garage . And I was thankful . Thanks alot Dave .0 -
Yes , they were DWV
fittings , said it right on the copper . I'm guessing the piping was as old as the boiler - 30 years or more . Where the copper met the old return near the floor , I noticed the inside of the copper was as smooth as new - no flaking off . The existing black steel return was older , but it did have a huge buildup of shellacky crud . It still held water , but the homeowner wanted the pipe under the floor replaced as a preventative measure . Thanks Kevin .0 -
Ron
you never fail to impress us with your work. I still wish I could have gone out on a job with you while I was in the area.

Nice job ron jr....I still have a smile on my face from seeing those stairs. Did you also use the first swear words of the New Year when seeing those steps? It always amazes me that we actually get these jobs done with all the bouncing and falling with do....Terry0 -
I wish you could have too , Chuck
I had a hanging GE with your name all over it . Thanks Chuck .
Are you gonna make it to the next Wetstock ?0 -
You guessed it
I was a ranting lunatic this morning when I saw the pictures of the job , and the stairs , at the shop . When I found out the boiler was gone already , I lightened up , just a little . It was me , Brian and the new guy Dan in the morning to bring the equipment in , then Dan left us to go help the oil tank crew . Having that 3rd guy in the morning makes a huge difference . Thanks Terry .0 -
silver lining?
One good thing about those stairs - if the new boiler got away from you on the way down, that wall would keep it from going too far :-)

Goes to show we'll never see it all.....
first time I've seen copper DWV on a steamer. But as usual Ron, you made it look and work perfectly.
