water heater cycling how often?

We have a triangle tube water heater made for domestic water and our radiant heating system.

How often should the water heater turn on and off when nothing is calling for hot water?

Once on how long should it run before turning off?

thanks.

    Cycling problems

Triangle Tube tank I'm assuming you mean it's a storage tank with the boiler heating the water inside of it, otherwise know as an indirect tank? Or perhaps, is there a burner on this tank and it does both heat and hot water, know as their combination heater? Are the rest of the zones being controlled the same way, via zone valves or by pumps? If you're not sure, pics always help.

    I'm thinking

you mean a combo tank that generates DHW and radiant? Similar to a Voyager.

Is there a heating call, if so the cycling will depend on the load it is suppling, BTU/hr wise.

If nothing at all is calling on the heat side, and no DHW running, then.. It will depend on the standby loss from the tank to the space it occupies.

Also the differntal that is built in, or adjusted on, the aquastat that runs the heater. Some of those condensing water heaters have a real tight differental. I think the Polaris has a 2 degree! This means 2 degrees between turn on and turn off.

If yours is this close, ask the rep or manufacture, then they will cycle a bit through out the day. Most tank manufactures brag about 1/2 degree per hour loss to the standby. This loss with a tight diff. aquastat could have the unit firing every couple hours without any call for heat or DHW.

Of course the temperature of the room the unit sits in will determine the standby loss.

Complicated enough of an answer! :)
