W.M. Ultra boiler question
LEAD PIPE
Member Posts: 199
My vent pipe comes out the side of my house approx. 10' above the ground. While working in the back yard every now and then I would get a wiff of natural gas. I finally figured out that it was coming from the boiler vent piping. I get a gas smell when the boiler first kicks on. Once it starts to run theres no more smell. Is this noraml?

Yup...
When you first start any combustion process, some of the ethyl mercaptan escapes unburnt. It's normal provided it clears immediately. If it persists, you need to check air/fuel settings.

STOP sniffing the pipe!!!!
Like Mark said, that is not at all uncommon.
Lots of CO coming out of that pipe!

how much
CO would most likely be at the exhaust? with a modern well tuned (I'm assuming well tuned) boiler such as the one here, what is a reasonable amount of CO to see?

CO depends...
on the manufacturer.
My T50 is running at around 70 PPM.
ME0 -
A Viessmann Vitodens
has less then 10ppm of co!!!

And I've seen Viessmans...
running at higher than 10 PPM CO, right out of the box...Like 30 to 50 PPM.
"Under ideal laboratory conditions" and the real world are two completely different places.
Of course their lab is not located a mile above sea level, is it...
Your mileage may vary depending upon your driving habits...
