Gas Boiler

Have 25 yr old BDP CO. gas boiler. Has 3 zone valves. Minimum one zone valve goes bad every year(Bell and Gosset).Latest problem:Intermittent pilot light problem and when furnace has cooled down, the burners flame on and off 6-7 times before the burners stay lite.At the same time the boiler makes a ticking noise(similar to when a starter or solenoid is sticking when starting a car). Propane supplier has checked out pressure, etc at the propane tank and regulator.Local repair people have looked at system repeatedly. New Boiler?? Help!!!!

Clicking? Electronic ignition? You didn't say. Clean the pilot, clean the sensor, use steel wool not sandpaper. Make sure the pilot flame is not lifting off the pilot hood and is hitting the sensor. Its an electrical connection thru the flame and has to make a complete path. The ticking is the spark. The solid state board doesn't think the pilot is lit.

    Pressure

checking the lp pressure at the tank and house regulator is a good idea but you need to check it just before the burner at the inlet to the gas valve and at the burner manifold when the gas valve opens. You should also check low voltage to the valve on a heat call. Also The burners should be thoroughly cleaned.

If you have a 25 year old BDP (Bryant, Day&Night, Payne) boiler

you almost must have a bimetal pilot sensor. Are there two wires going to the pilot assembly? If so, you have a bimetal sensor pilot assembly, in which case I would bet the pilot needs to be replaced because the bimetal is getting weak. You may be able to get away with just cleaning the pilot, but I would just replace it instead.
  • Delayed ignition

Aside from cleaning sensor and pilot burner check ground wires from ignition module and gas valve as well, as a bad ground will interrupt signals to module which makes the whole show go.
