Went on a service call today that just made me smile...

The lady noticed my puzzled look and asked if I'd ever worked on a radiant system before. I just smiled and said "a couple". Nothing was labeled, no electric switch, just copper and pex and romex. Made her my "thermostat operator" to isolate the relay for the zone not working. That gave me enough time to find the bad connection to the circ. Also enough time to check things out.

Get this:(A) NO mixed down temps, all zones get 170F water.
Staple-up is 1/2", 16"OC. AND, the insulation under this staple-up? REYNOLDS WRAP ! At least they put the shinier side up :)

She says the basement floor is hotter than H#*l ! Go figure. A "friend" installed it 5 yrs ago when house was built, and now he won't return calls. I couldn't help myself, I asked her if she tried Disneyworld :)

It ain't rocket science but it sure isn't magic either. The laws of physics still apply. Even to radiant systems. People just think you throw some tube in somewhere and heat just "happens". More often than not it's more like "S--t happens. It seems I've seen that "look" on the faces of to many homeowners around here this fall. I was just at a brand new house, constructed this summer, lost the bid on it by $8,500. I priced a Vitodens, tube in the basement slab, climate panel on the main floor plus some wall heating in the living room to accomodate the wall of glass looking over the lake and on and on. Just a real nice three temp system. The carpenter called and wondered if I would take a look at it. "Won't heat the house right", he says. What do I find but the same crap Tony was just talking about. Put in by a "radiant expert". Nothing I could do for them other than remove it and replace it with what the house needed in the first place. Makes me sick!!
