can't lift the radiators

isa

we have clanging in our steam radiators. We tried to lift them to put a wedge underneath one end and rectify the slope (all our radiators are level), but they are too heavy. Is there a trick to this? And how do we get to the radiators that are recessed in the walls ?
Thanks .

    If they're exactly level

they should be OK. It's only when they're pitched away from the condensate return (steam inlet on a one-pipe system) and water collects in them that you have problems.

If it's a one-pipe system, the shutoff valve at the steam inlet must always be fully open or closed. Leaving it partially closed will cause water to collect in the radiators, causing banging.

    Radiators

Use a piece of pipe or a large pipe wrench under the end of radiator you want to lift. Lift the end of pipe up and place shims under legs.
