aquastat setting

I have a Honeywell l8124a aquastat set to a high of 180 and a low of 160 at a diff.of 10. We will be leaving the house unattended for 3.5 months. What should the aquastat be set to to conserve oil, being we will not have need for domestic hot water.I plan on leaving the thermostat @ 58 to 60.

    aquastat setting

Depends on where you live and how cold it gets. With no demand for hot water, set the aquastat low limit, around 120-130 to prevent condesation in the boiler. When you return set it back and increase the diff. to 20 It will give you better hot water capacity. If you have an older boiler, lowering the temp may cause some leakage around the coil gasket. Best to have you service co. check it out ahead of time to be sure. Water damage could be way more than the cost fo the fuel to maintain temp.

    winterize vs. roll the dice

three and a half months with no monitering of boiler and system sounds a little risky considering the consequences if someyhing goes wrong. why not drain and winterize? better safe than sorry. ever see a freeze up followed by water damage from a burst heating line. you will wanna get on a bus and just keep going.
