Quietside Boilers

We have run in to many problems with them. I guess I want to see what others have found.

    Quietsides

Just what problems have you run into? We have many of these units out and have had only one problem with them, a noisy pump. Other than that one unit these have been the most trouble free unit we have seen. If there are problems with them I would like to know about it so that we can be forwarned.

  • Well for the most part we have put in at least 20 of them in the past year installed in all types of systems. Hot water gravity to base board loop. I feel they are not a good replacement for a gravity system because any debris will shut them down. With that been said I have run in to a few problems with loop systems the cicrulator has the pump curves of a taco 009 witch may work for small pipe,no problem there please forgive me but im still thinking about gravity. My main point is that ive gone on calls late at night to find that they are piped as to specs and still no heat or hot water. For the most part I think they are junk. I have found circulator dead after 120 days and boards that drop out for no reason. They neeed a spyro vent because air is a problem. For the most part is we have had many return calls on the same boiler and its chapped my **** every time we go there its some thing new the install was to specs as far as the factory rep said. Its a new problem every time. I just found out that we were there to night and the tech found a bad connection on a limit switch.

    I haven't-

put one on a gravity system. For the most part we do not use a low mass boiler on gravity systems and we pipe all gravity sytems primary secondary with secondary circulators and screen traps. All of the Quietsides that we have out are on baseboard or radiant sytems, or a combination of both. I cannot right at the minute remember how many we have out but as I said above we have had only one problem on one unit. I have had MUCH more troubles with the Slant Fin boilers than with anything else, have been putting in the Quietsides for about two years now with no return calls. If we have them in properly we can just turn them on and drive away. Keep us posted as I am very interested in any problems that may develop with these things so that I will be ready should they happen to me.

    Quietside boilers

We have also had no end of trouble with them. We installed two QVM9 and one QVM8-SS. So far the QVM8 was the real nut breaker. The heating side woked ok for in floor radiant, the domestic hot water would not meet specification or even close. (Quietside has a bulletin out on this). To placate owner and on Quietside recommendation, we installed an electic water heater as resevoir. This didn't work worth crap. This boiler's domestic priority apparently works on a temperature sensor rather than flow sens. All would work well, boiler fired and stayed fired until recirc. pump was sending about 65F to 70F water back to domestic coil. The boiler would then shut down until return water temp lowered to less then 65F. We ended up eating a $1200 hit and installed a power vent HWT. On the QVM9- one the combustion fan has gone, on the other the necessity of an electric HWT as storage. Then the supplied thermostat went nuts and we replaced it with a new upgraded model. It lasted 2 days(until Saturday night) and then it went. We had a spare "old style" and put it in. It has now been running with it for 6 weeks. We cancelled all outstanding boiler orders and have gone over to Trinity. Twelve installs, 1 call back for a HSI. We nervously await the end of the warranty period with Quietside, but even so we will not see our customers unsatisfied.

Has anyone used the quietside oil boiler (new version with improved oil pump) I have a request from a customer to use because of the energy star rating.
