My advice....
Quote:Mr. Milne...."You gotta let someone else use it you know!". I've taught the course to the rest of the class, and find it in my truck the most. I don't know if they're just stubborn, or too proud to view the future as a sucess.
I find it an outstanding tool . There are very few places it won't fit, and proper planning leads to almost zero places. I just did a "boiler in a closet" install and used it for all things that would have taken too much time with a torch.(1 1/4 inch feeds and returns in this space would have lead to CO poisoning in a day or two).
Get used to the pricing of doing a job with it ! The time is cut manyfold, but the price of the fittings is substantially more. Just a warning. The other thing I found at first was availability of fittings. This has become far less noticable in the last few months alone. A good supply house is now stocking piles of fittings. A GREAT supply house is finding all the silly little tees and reducers that we use everyday, and stocking them also.
In my humble opinion, this is a great tool , and a big step forward in the industry. Make sure you tell your insurance company that you use it ! It may lead to a decrease in your premiums, knowing you aren't bringing FIRE into a dwelling , as often as you once did. Enjoy it ! Chris. Wanted to attach a good photo, but can't figure out how0 -
OK, seriously...........
The biggest hurdle is inventory, as Chris said. You need a good wholesaler on your side, but you still have to invest in stock yourself.
I have yet to have a leak, but I can see it will be a pain if I do because you are taking out sections of piping, not just a fitting like soldering.
On the positive side, labor is cut at least five fold when you take prep and clean-up in to consideration. Might even be ten fold. The labor savings more than make up for the price difference in fittings, which, in my opinion, until you get to 1 1/4" and above, really isn't that much from soldered fitting, especially if you use long sweep solder fittings.
You will still your trusty B-tank, since the ProPress ball valves require fittings on both side. Can add up to substantial money to use the valves.
All-in-all, I'll never go back to soldering.

Hows this Chris ?
By the way maybe the reason the others don't use it more is , They can't pry it out of your hands .
This tool is way cool..
