Drop Header Question

As shown in the picture, it allows the water to fall back before it reaches the top of the risers.

As for the swing joints, the extra bend makes it so that the header isn't rigidly held at 90° to the offsets. The extra bend is a swing joint.

You could go too low on the header and have it not be enough above the water line for the equalizer to drain well.

    Drop Header Question

I may install another new steam boiler in one of my outbuildings and am considering trying a drop header. I have been studying various photos of drop header installs posted to this site for the past several months and I noticed that some of them seem to disregard the manufacturer's specs relative to minimum offset length and minimum distance from water line to header. Are these dimensions less critical with a drop header because the steam is naturally drier by virtue of the drop back down?? Also, I thought another purpose of the long offset was to allow for ample expansion and contraction of the boiler sections so why does a drop header no longer make that an issue? I was intending to allow for the spec offset and water-line/header dimension measured AFTER the install of the drop header. Would this just be a waste of excess piping? Thanks.

    Thank you

Thank you Noel. As always, you explain things very well. I'm glad I asked before I began cutting pipe!
