Tank overflow

Although I have a low water cutoff the water keeps rising in the gauge and spills through the radiators when the heat is on. What causes this problem and how can it be fixed. Some leaky valves were changed but problem continues. This is a steam boiler which uses gas. It had overheated and I had to change all the parts including wiring two years ago. Thank you.

The flooding is coming from a auto feeder, a leaking manual valve or a domestic coil in the boiler. If you have an auto feeder this is probably it. It may be feeding because it's working correctly because condensate is coming back too slow or not working ie, leaking through. If no auto feeder manual valves are known to leak through when closed. If you have a domestic coil for your bath hot water you need that tested. If you know what you have let us know and someone will have the test to determine the answer.

You are correct. The automatic was giving wrong signals. I got a boiler repairman who steamcleaned and added the solution for dregs. I have an old return line, so he thought it may have accumulated dirt and water was seeping back slowly like you said. However, all seemed well so I am having an electrician check the feeder this evening and I will report back if all is well. Thanks for your excellent and knowledgeable response.

The follow up. The repairs were done. It was a sensor/probe inside the boiler that needed to be cleaned. It was taken out and cleaned with sandpaper I think. That sensor/probe sends the message to the waterfeeder that the boiler needs water. When dirty, it sends mixed signals and this causes water to be added continuously. I will still watch it for a while to make sure it continues to work well. Thanks.
