Questions on Paloma Hytech boiler

... wall-hung boiler today. The pilot wouldn't stay lit and the tenant kept manually lighting the boiler. I noticed that the pilot flame was weak and wasn't hitting the thermocouple, but there didn't appear to be a pilot adjustment on the gas valve (which wasn't a universal type like a Honeywell). Also, the knob on the gas valve was broken. Since I don't know if parts are still available for these, and the unit appeared to be older, I recommended replacing the unit. Was I off base?
Since I'm a newbie to the heating field, I have some questions about the Paloma Hytech:
1) What is the general reliability of this unit (any quirks, common problems)?
2) When were they manufactured, and are parts still available?
3) Why are there two pilot burners on these? Do these units have a flame sensor (I saw what appeared to be a flame sensor next to the left-hand pilot burner)?
4) Is there any way to adjust the pilot on these?
Thanks,
Ken

    Did you...

check for dirt/dust in the pilot???? May be that simple...
On some of those the cover over the pilot will warp and allow the flame to come off of the thermo.....bend it back down and cool!!!....your in business.
  • What is the Model Number

of the unit. Is it an older Paloma Pak or is it the later Hy-tech model.

I have literature on all models. By your post it seems you have the older thermocouple model.

    Give me some more info.

There are parts available at R.L. Gourley here in New England they are located at:

    80 Felton Street

    Waltham, MA 02254-0030

    Ask for Bob Shupe Jr.

    re: Paloma Pak

Try www.tanklesswaterheaters.com. We still carry parts and troubleshoot these units. 1-800-873-3507 xt. 104 (Jack), xt.107 (Bob), or xt.101 (Seth).

    Tim,

I didn't write down the model number of the unit.
  • Is it a Paloma or a Hytech?

The Paloma early version had a thermocouple system. The later version and Hytech was a White Rodger Cycle Pilot system with a mercury pilot.

    Which do you have?

    Tim,
The cover of the unit said Hytech, but it did have a thermocouple and two pilots. The second pilot (which remained off) was next to what looked like a flame sensor. I'm a newbie and have no idea what a cycle pilot system is or looks like.
  • Everything I am looking at

has only one pilot. If it is a thermocouple model, remove the pilot and clean the pilot then install a new thermocouple. This is not a conventional thermocouple by the way. The threads are metric. You need to order it special for those units.

Cycle Pilot will have a White Rodgers gas valve either 36C or 36D series, it will have a small white box which generates the spark to light the mercury pilot.
