Payne Nat gas furnace controller kindof a PAIN

I am a home owner and the forced air gas controller cycles the gas on and off way too much , like ON for 8 sec. OFF for 14 sec.
furnace is Model 397HAW060100 product 397HAW060100 ACBA
valve 8309 1
model 646A-X
P/N 301273-702
The drawing for the PAYNE Natural gas system controller board is a 305754-402 Rev B
also on on the dwg/schem is a 397H/375A (NAT gas only)
also the pilot doesn't shut off, it is supposed to start on demand with the spark box ! If I turn off the gas and let the pilot detector cool the sparker does light the pilot.
does that sound like the main valve pilot circuit is
stuck , or the controller is telling the pilot to stay on ?
where can I get another controller board or parts for my board !

It sounds like the gas valve.
That systems is supposed to operate as follows:
When the pick coil of the gas valve is energized, gas flows to the pilot. The pilot gas is ignited by a spark produced by a spark generator. Simultaneosly, inducer motor comes up to speed, moving sail switch, energizing the hold coil of the gas valve. The pick coil of the gas valve and the spark generator are deenergized when the contacts of the pilot flame sensing switch move from the normally closed position, breaking the circuit to the pick coil and the spark generator. The pilot is a Bryant 733 pilot. In approximately 50 to 60 seconds, the normally open pilot-flame sensing contacts close making the circuit to the MGV (Main Operator) of the gas valve. The gas valve should open in 10 seconds, allowing gas flow to the main burners, which are ignited by the pilot.
From your post it sounds like the bi-metal in the pilot may not be making and holding, the pilot needs cleaned. After that if it still does not hold it will need replaced. The other possibility is that the hold coil in the valve may not be holding. That 646 valve is no longer made. There is a White Rodgers replacement 36E93 gas valve.
Having said all of that I would suggest getting a professional to take a look at it. Bryant is worked on by your local Carrier dealer most of the time.0 -
Short cycling
It sounds like the bi-metal switch in the pilot has failed causing the burners to short cycle. Replace it with a 740 pilot and watch your problems disappear. The 733 pilot was a disaster and notorious for failure and was replaced by the 740. Carrier/BDP has not made the 733 pilot in years. Good Luck! -DF

Money
Are you in Calif. ? Most of the Carrier branded Payne stuff seemed to be there. Anyway I would have someone carefully check your heat exchanger before putting any money into this old furnace, if it's OK then new spark pilot assembly should do the trick. If as Timmie thinks the furnace still has the recalled board with the flow sail switch you need the recall kit if one is to be found which I doubt. The recall kit had a replacement board and pressure switch. If the furnace needs a gas valve it would have to look really good before I would put that much money into it.0
