banging boiler

My boiler amkes a banging sound when it runs. Can hear it in the next room as it is circulating. When it stops, I hear it in the basement. Have had various opinions that range from air locks, bad air bleeder valves, to sludge in my boiler. Any ideas?

If the banging is inside the boiler
two likely causes are sludge, or a flame that's too big or hitting the cast-iron parts of the boiler.
